All Java programs have a very strict organization. The name of the class (program name) must be identical to the name of the java file it is saved in (case matters). Input in java is accomplished in a variety of classes with the most common being the Scanner class and the JOptionPane class. Variables in java are strictly typed. int, double and char are the primitives and the String class is structured to operate in a similar manner. Control structures include if, else and switch-case. The standard looping structures include for ( ; ; ) while ( ) and do – while. Arrays in java are fully implemented. The Scanner class provides the easiest way to provide input from data files. Subprograms or functions are called methods in java with the ability to pass parameters and return values.

About the Author
Steven P. Warr has taught computer science in public High schools for more than twenty-five years. In transitioning from Pascal, and C++ to Java, he has absorbed not only the nuances of programming logic, but also the best methods to teach that logic to students. Prior to teaching, he was a career army officer, retiring after 32 years as a lieutenant colonel. He lives in the Houston, Texas area where he continues to teach computer science at Klein High School.
