About the Book

With Vision and Courage chronicles the remarkable 100 year journey of Starr King School for the Ministry as it survives financial hardships, wars and their aftermath, depression and tragedy to bring to life and sustain its vision of educating people for religious leadership, especially Unitarian Universalist ministry, through student centered, participatory learning that combines intellectual excellence, practical experience, and deepened self awareness. Dear Arliss: I spent several hours of last evening and all this Friday reading your history of Starr King, With Vision and Courage. I think you have done an important and incredible job. You have made a happy marriage of detail and overarching theme, and you have kept a judicious perspective on goals, implementation and outcome. You've handled both the synergistic and opposing forces that have created, and are creating, Starr King with an enviable evenhandedness I think you deserve an honored place alongside Earl Morse Wilbur as an historian.

About the Author

Arliss Ungar, a graduate of Stanford University in political science, holds an honorary doctorate from Starr King School for the Ministry, where she served as chair of the Board of Trustees. She heads the Balázs Scholars Program which each year brings a Transylvanian Unitarian minister to study at the school.
