Spitfire

The smoke grew thick and heavy. Dillon knew that there wasn’t much time left to find the boy trapped inside. She turned her air pack on and grabbed her halagan. “Get out of my way!” she yelled to her crew as she passed them. Her best friend and partner, Jack, grabbed a pick and followed. The eerie creaking of the collapsing apartment rang loud in Dillon’s ears; she hated this part of the job! She wanted to find the boy and get out! She and Jack dropped to their knees and began the search for the missing boy. She heard a loud pop. Her instincts told her to move, as part of the ceiling came down. Looking back, she saw that Jack had moved out as well. They headed down the hall crawling, checking every room. They came to a room with the door shut. Dillon jumped to her feet to open it. It wouldn’t move. Jack moved in and tried to break the door down. Dillon took her halagan and started to hack away at the door until there was a sizable hole in it. A mans body lay across the doorway blocking access to the room. Dillon climbed over him and looked around. She reached down to check his pulse. There was none. She spotted the boy in the middle of the room. She knelt down by him and took her air mask off. “Spit! What the hell are you doing?” Jack yelled at her. “It’s grab and go!” Dillon placed her air mask over the boys face and lifted him into her embrace. “Do you ever follow procedures?” Jack asked her as she walked by him. “Grab and go, Jack!” She said as she stepped over the dead body with the boy still in her arms. Dillon and Jack stopped in the living room. Dillon felt the smoke starting to get to her. They stepped through the piles of flaming embers and walked to the door. Part of the ceiling came crashing down, driving the firefighters back into the living room. Dillon started to cough. Jack pointed to a broken window, and they moved to it. Jack cleared the glass from the window and climbed out. Dillon took the air mask off the boy and passed him through to Jack. As she was about to climb through, the floor gave away. She moved to her left and was blindsided by a beam crashing down. She lay lifeless as the flames came closer to her.
