About the Book
"For 31 years I was privileged and very proud to get out of bed in the morning and put on the uniform of the United States Navy," says Robert P. Smyth. Sea Stories is about Smyth's 31 years in the US Navy-at sea, in the air and on shore. We are with him when he hears that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. We are there when he becomes a Naval Aviation Cadet, earns his Navy Wings of Gold, and becomes a flight instructor at Pensacola.
We fly with him all over the Western Pacific during World War II. We are there as he serves many years on aircraft carriers, chases Russian submarines above the Arctic Circle, goes around Cape Horn, commands a Navy aircraft squadron in the Mediterranean and a Navy survey ship off Vietnam. "My life in the Navy always seemed like a fantasy story with more to come," he writes. And through it all is woven a love story about the author and his extraordinary Navy wife.
