About the Book

Ben Sterling should be celebrating his election as sheriff of California's Diablo County. Instead, he is in the hospital fighting for his life while his son lies in the morgue.

Unable to walk or talk, the sheriff is powerless to halt the disintegration of everything he holds dear. His life spirals into a seemingly bottomless pit of tragedy and despair.

Within his family, and his police family, conspirators plot against him. A rash of "dirty tricks" are employed to embarrass the beleaguered department.

Harassment and humiliation take a back seat to serious threats to kill Sheriff Ben Sterling. To save him, his deputies must put themselves in jeopardy. Even then, there is a question as to who will win: the new sheriff, or a seasoned and demented Internal Affairs commander with a score to settle.

Duty! is a story about cops-the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is written by a cop, as only a cop could.

About the Author

Born into a police family, Alan Burton joined his father in a metropolitan California sheriff's office. Both commanded divisions, and both went on to gain international reputations. Alan graduated from the FBI National Academy, and later published fifteen popular public safety textbooks. This is his fourth published novel.
