About the Book
Could you find your way without so much as a trail of breadcrumbs?
A tragic 1925 accident plunges nine-year-old Edna Modene into the role of orphan. Famished Heart is the moving story of her journey to find her place in the world after shattering tragedies. Abandoned by a callous step-mother, she must find a way to piece herself together like her cherished patchwork quilt, into a whole person, capable of surviving and finding love and acceptance.
Set against a sprawling Oklahoma sky, her travels take her into the homes of reluctant relatives, an Indian Boys' School, and eventually an orphanage. She must come to grips with an ugly, personal truth, and discover the truth about love, beauty, and prejudice.
Running the emotional gamut from poignant, sad, funny and courageous, her story is liberally sprinkled with endearing characters, homespun wisdom, and treasured family recipes. Glimpses into the world of quilting, crafting and gardening richly texture this real life story of her painful passage into womanhood.
