About the Book

The author of this book began his life in 1912 amid conditions that have broken lesser spirits. He faced challenges and witnessed events that might have caused many to lose faith and become bitter. The spirit that shines through these extraordinary tales, however, is one of hope and and an undying faith life and the goodness of God. We are told of hardships and tragedies, not with pathos and complaint, but simply as situations that had to be met head-on with optimism, hard work, a firm confidence in his fellow human beings, and — perhaps his most characteristic trait — a sense of humor.

Melvin Jensen witnessed and participated with gusto in the twentieth century as it unfolded in America’s heartland. He tells us many entertaining and personal tales of growing up in rural South Dakota and, in the process, shows us that the real heroes of our time are not necessarily those who make the ten o’clock news, but individuals who live “ordinary” lives with inner strength and courage.
