CHAPTER 1 It poured. Buckets. The streets of the city were overflowing with heaven’s watery bounty. I sat in my office that Sunday thinking that business was unusually unhurried. But then my career as a private detective had never been what you would call demanding or lucrative. Not that I was complaining. Well—actually I was crying myself to sleep every night with my mother’s voice echoing a singsong “I-told-you-so” in my ear. I was also disconcerted by the violent screams and absurd heavy breathing outside my apartment door at three in the morning. But this was the path I’d chosen, right? I would have liked to start this bit of memoir a little more “intrepidly,” but in doing so would lead you away from the truth that was the start of my career. The year was 1992; it was both a simpler and more complex time, thanks to the near absence of cellular phones and the internet. But aside from that, it had been eight years since I graduated college and I had yet to land the case that would change my life forever. As such, I was learning the hard way that the life of a private eye was not what I had expected. And what had I expected? Everything but the truth.
