About the Book
The students in Mrs. Sponaugle's fifth grade had a wonderful year. While they learned many things, from the Civil War to equivalent fractions, the lesson they are sure not to forget is how to be a creative writer. This book includes selected short stories and essays from the students in Mrs. Sponaugle's fifth grade class at Tomahawk Intermediate School in Hedgesville, West Virginia. Their writings range from "What I feel when I look at the American flag" to "My experience on a deserted island." The crowning achievement of this class is their essay on what they learned from having pen pals in South Korea, for which they received first place at the social studies fair. Included in this book is an insightful letter written by Mrs. Sponaugle that should be read by every student about to enter middle school.
