About the Book
Ostracized from the remote community in which they had found love and marriage, Ted and Heather Burke set out in a rented truck to find an ideal spot to call home. They discover it: a small island off the southern coast. Heather’s success with her painting in the international art world increases. Shows of her work in New York and Paris bring even greater recognition. A girl, Traci, is born. They return to Petak’s Bend where the six families reconcile. Back on their island, another baby is born, Juliette. This novel doesn’t conform to the typical format in which a major conflict is created then resolved in the final chapters. These are the hourly, daily dramas of normal lives, resolved by living through them: the ineffective attempt to teach someone to drive a car; the death of an understanding alligator; fidelity in face of sensual enticement; being humble in the face of fame; above all, the indomitable power of abiding love.
