To still his doubts with God, Alexander Covington devotes a year of his life to a missionary post in Africa where he comes to grips with Father Pretorious whose worship for food program forments disastrous results for all concerned.

Arriving as the mission chapel is burning, Alexander finds the missionary outpost less like a fertile fixture of God nestled in the African bushveld, but the driving force behind Saku, the black chief and his marauding force whose domain Father Pretorious serves. Saku, an old foe and once friend of Father Pretorious, now wages continuous war on the priest and his God, his only purpose to destroy them both.

Thrust into this cauldron of hate and distrust, Alexander encounters Sabela, an African beauty educated in Europe to whom he loses his heart.
