When the earth was first created, it was much different than it is today. The time lapse of centuries and nature’s upheavals has done much to alter the geographic landscape of planet earth. In its infant days, the earth had only one landmass, a condition known as Pangaea. In this state, there was no division of continents as we now have. It wasn’t until after the waters abated during the great deluge of Noah’s day that the geographical puzzle was dispersed across the globe. It was in Pangaea’s center place where our first parents, Adam and Eve, lived. They enjoyed their abode in a lush garden spot east of a location called Eden. (See Genesis 2:8, Moses 3:8, 15, Abraham 5:8, 11.) Modern revelation explains that Eden itself was in the land now known as North America. Brigham Young once said, “Joseph, the Prophet, told me that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri. When Adam was driven out [of the garden] he went to the place we now call Adam-ondi-Ahman, Daviess County, Missouri. There he built an altar and offered sacrifices.” This truth clarifies a popular misconception: the cradle of the world was not located on the Eastern Hemisphere as many falsely suppose, but rather on the Western Hemisphere in an area now known as the United States of America. A popular hymn written by William W. Phelps reflects the drama of Eden with these words: This earth was once a garden place, With all her glories common, And men did live a holy race, And worship Jesus face to face In Adam-ondi-Ahman Her land was good and greatly blest, Beyond all Israel’s Cannan; Her fame was known from east to west, Her peace was great and pure the rest Of Adam-ondi-Ahman

ANDREW S. WEEKS is the author or editor of four books, his most is Spiritual Temples: Heavenly Experiences in the Houses of God. A journalist by profession, he lives in the Northwest United States where he works as a newspaper reporter and editor.
