Morton's classic study of freed slaves and fugitive slaves on the Kenya coast belongs in any comparative examination of world slavery. Morton's book also is the only full account of slaves and ex-slaves struggle for freedom during the European colonial conquest of Kenya.

About the Author

Fred Morton publishes extensively on African Slavery. He and Elizabeth Eldredge edited the seminal work on slavery in the South African interior (Slavery in South Africa: Captive Labor on the Dutch Frontier, Westview 1994). His most recent book is on Bostwana and South Africa (When Rustling Was an Art: Pilane?s Kgatla, 1840-1902, David Philip/New Africa Books, 2008.)
