About the Book

The Christian doctrine of the Atonement is the source of increasing controversy today. What About the Cross?, traces the history of the doctrine and argues for a new model better suited to the late modern and early postmodern mind. Waldron Scott first examines the relevant New Testament texts, which, while presenting no formal theory of Atonement, provide the "seed bed" from which a dozen theories, would sprout during the subsequent two millennia. Next, Scott explores in detail each of the historical theories before briefly describing contemporary theories such as René Girard's and J. Denny Weaver's. In the final chapters he offers his own model, one distinctive feature of which is how the theory of evolution illuminates the doctrine.
