Lesson 38: Personal-Business Letters [Luke 1:3, “It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,”] A personal-business letter is written from an individual to a business. These are more formal than the typical personal letters written to friends or relatives. Examples include writing a letter to a company commending their service or complaining about a missing part from an order. The parts and line spacing of a personal-business letter are: Dateline, press Enter four times. Inside address (name and address of receiver), press Enter twice but use single-line spacing. Notice that the state abbreviation is capitalized and street names are spelled out (e.g. Lane, Street, Road, Boulevard), but directions are not. Salutation, press Enter twice. Body, press Enter twice between paragraphs but use single-line spacing within each paragraph. Complimentary closing, press Enter four times to leave room for the Writer’s Signature, (signed after printing) and Writer’s Identification (name and address of writer), use single-line spacing. Older styles of this letter format included the writer’s address before the dateline instead of after the writer’s name. Margins for letters are 1” top and bottom, 1.25” sides. After typing the letter, center the letter vertically but not horizontally. The format for the four letters is block style. Nothing is indented. When using newer word processors, a pink dotted line may appear under an address or the dateline. This is called a smart tag. It will not print.
