About the Author
?MADMAC? is Bill Madigan and Jorge Macfarland who have 35 years of combined teaching experience. They have a dynamic approach to English, social science and world language instruction. As a team, MADMAC began in 1995 at the request of their principal at Mt. Miguel high school. The principal and counseling staff worried about a growing population of students who were severely under performing in English and social science classes. The first MADAMC class had 78 students and they were assigned to ?0? period which started at 6:45 am. By years end, 80% of the students passed the ESL exit exam. With this encouragement, MADMAC worked with the guidance of Dr. Maria Montano-Harmon of Cal state Fullerton, an important researcher and educator in the area of academic language acquisition. In the second year of MADMAC the class average for reading comprehension rose over two and a half grade levels?a skill leap for which MADMAC is quite proud especially considering that most of the students were quite detached and discouraged with schooling. MADMAC now teaches high school and travels across several western states conducting workshops in English and social science instruction.
