It was approximately 11:30 PM when Tracie said she needed to see her baby. It would be her first time to see Braden. The hospital staff could not believe she had the strength, physically or emotionally, to see Braden that night. They admired her determination and courage for being able to get out of bed, sit in a wheel chair, and go see her critically ill baby that very night. “Scrubbing in” was required every time a visitor entered the NICU. Gowns were furnished and required to be worn over our clothes. As we finished scrubbing in, and while I was helping Tracie with her gown, all I could think about is how she would react when she saw Braden. … Lying there, motionless, on a special bed with a warmer under him, with his own nurse watching his every move, connected by all kinds of monitors, tubes, wires, and a ventilator, was the gift for which we had asked God so many months ago. Even though it had not gone as we had expected, we were madly in love with our little boy!

About the Author
Steve Patterson was born and raised in Borger, Texas. God has allowed him to participate in a variety of activities, both as a man, and a father, enabling him to better communicate with others how Christ continues to work in his life. He is a past board member of the Children’s Miracle Network. He is currently serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer for abused and/or neglected children.
