Chapter 2: WHEN TO HELP From childhood on, we all strive to be more independent. So, when circumstances change so that we or loved ones are not able to remain fully independent, we often find ourselves afloat on that infamous Egyptian river – “De Nile.” Sometimes adult children must engage in a game of bumper boat to gently nudge their parents from “De Nile” into reality. Fortunately, there are professional people available to help you with that process. Most parents don’t want to be a burden to their children. They often won’t even tell you about their problems. However, repeated references to a particular concern or something that causes them great difficulty, may be their way of reaching out for help in finding a solution. Close friends or neighbors can also provide valuable insights into any problems your parent(s) may have in coping with day-to-day activities. Before we go further, you should be aware that a sudden behavior change or signs of confusion, may be the result of an infection. Amazingly enough, a simple Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) can cause the strangest symptoms in seniors. A call or visit to the doctor’s office is probably your best first course of action in most cases.
