Elsie thought the night was turning out splendidly, with light puffs of warm air wafting onto the porch, punctuated by the sound of crickets chirping, and warm inquisitive glances from the dreamiest man she had laid eyes on in a long, long time. She smiled at him, took his hand and led him to the porch railing where they could take in the clear sky, full of stars. "Just look at that," she said, pointing overhead. "A perfect night sky, just like in a Hollywood movie." "And just for a perfect evening." Elsie studied him to see if he was mocking or serious. He held her gaze without smiling. With a nervous little smile she cleared her throat and quickly continued. "Did you know I went to the same college as CLark Gable?" "No, I didn't know that. Is he from Akron?" "No, he was born in some other city in Ohio. But he worked at the Miller Rubber Company on South High Street and attended Akron university." "Studying theater?" "No, I believe it was medicine. He wanted to be a doctor." "Poor fellow. He never made it. Maybe he'll get a chance to play one on the big picture screen someday." "Maybe he will," she agreed. Robert had finished the repairs on John's automobile and went back into the house. He peeked out the screen door,eavesdropping just long enough to assure himself that all was going well with the newly acquainted couple. Once satisfied, he quietly stepped back into the parlor. Periodically, he heard roars of laughter coming from the porch. He had never heard Elsie laugh so cheerfully, or for that matter, ever seem to enjoy herself so much.
