...Goofy Wilson doesn't join Animal and his buddies for a beer. Fortunately, for Goofy, The Jones Memorial Hospital is just across the side street from The Pit. Crossfire's last set goes on as if there hadn't been a huge fight here just minutes before. The crowd stays on until the end. After the last song, they quickly pour out of the place and I start to pack up my drums. I'm thinking about the events of the evening and come to the conclusion that the new band's first night has been a major success. "Dan," I say: "this is going to be some summer." Dan responds: "yes, well...Todd, this was an unusual night for me. I don't recall seeing anything like this growing up in California." "It's not Surf City," I respond as I try to wheel my drum case across the floor. The case has a mind of it's own, like it's hell bent on traveling in circles. Looking at Dan, I smile and say: "This is my hopeless case." Dan laughs, as I struggle to get my drum case to go in the right direction, and says to me: "That fight scene tonight makes me feel like I've moved to the Wild West." "Well you actually moved east but it is a fact that Gabby Hayes grew up here in Wellsville." Dan says: "You mean that old, bearded guy from the cowboy movies?" "He's the one." Dan, shaking his head, says: "I can believe that." Then he adds: "Maybe that article in the New York Times was right about this being Appalachia. " Then, with a grin, he adds: "One benefit of playing in Appalachia is that you entertain the crowd and the crowd entertains you." We finsh loading up the band equipment in the hearse that we use to carry half of our equipment. Dan, Warren and I get ready to head off to Hamburger Willies in the hearse. Both Jack and Luke decide that their stomachs can't handle Willies tonight. Jake, as usual, has found himself a blond with big boobs. He has plans tonight that don't include going to Willies. Jake is what we call a lucky bastard; yes, again this year, his rock and roll playing summer job includes the side benefit of gorgeous, naked women...

BOB GARDNER played drums in regionally popular, Western New York, rock bands from 1963 through 1976. He fell in love with Jacci Lee in 1966. He drew from these real life experiences in writing this fictionalized walk down memory lane. Bob and Jacci now live in Saranac Lake, New York.
