"This is what caused the disaster, Professor," Saravasti Chowdhury said sliding the black box across the desk to Montri. The two sat in a dimly lit conference room at ITI headquarters in Chicago. Montri had completed the memorial arrangements for his lost family members but didn't want to return to CIU until he discovered who was responsible for the earthquake, how it was done, and why. Montri turned the device over several times and placed it back on the table. He aimed his Haltevis at it, pressed a button and the box opened like a blooming flower into four separate sections. "Garman’s fingerprints are all over this both figuratively and literally," he observed checking the display screen on his phone. "This technology was developed by ITI and was intended to assist in ore drilling. How did his minions alter it and more importantly how do they get their hands on it in the first place?" He barked powering down the Haltevis and also closing the device. "They're calling it a Teslonic Wave Generator," Chowdhury said. "Garman had a plant here at the company and we intercepted him while he shuttled the device back here from CIU which is where Garman used it against your family." "Good," Montri said a cold edge to his voice. "I'm sure he didn't act alone." "We've been questioning him for the past few days but his resistance is quite strong," Chowdhury said. “We’ll break him eventually. "I’ll supervise that project,” Montri said. “I want you to handle my classes for the next few weeks. I need to stay here and reengineer this thing and see if it can be used against Garman--give him a taste of his own tonic.” Chowdhury gave a look of disappointment. “Not to worry,” Montri said seeing Chowdhury’s expression. “You’ll be included when the action begins.” Montri gathered up the device and his phone, stood and placed his hand on Chowdhury’s shoulder. Thank you professor," Chowdhury said standing to face Montri. They exited the conference room. "I also have an equally important project that needs special attention." Montri whispered as they made their way down the corridor. "Is this the preparation for the Wrightwood internship?" Chowdhury asked. "Exactly," Montri replied smiling for the first time in weeks. It was not his normal smile of joy but one of malice. "With Wrightwood in our camp and the device now in our hands, Garman will soon be nothing but a footnote."

About the Book
Beal Wrightwood was born with a purpose. Destined to be the next generation of a secret society, he has no idea that so much rests on his shoulders. It is not long before Beal discovers his destiny—to reestablish an ancient order of conservators thought to be long extinct.
As Beal embarks on a yearlong journey that will test his newfound special abilities, he soon realizes it is up to him to save the world from self-destruction.
