About the Book

What is a conservative anyway? This was my mission. But unfortunately, I wouldn’t find one conservative who could give me an intelligent answer. The simplest and most frequent answer they gave was “less government”. But this appears to be just a stock answer they all give because they really don’t know what they are. But, they have no problem telling you what they don’t like or what is wrong with everything. Conservatives are solution free. They are problem finders, not problem solvers.

Conservatives thrive on the opinions of others. They have an addictive need to listen to talk radio or watch their favorite television news channel. This emotional need could qualify them for psychiatric treatment. The opinions they hear are more important than the facts. In many ways conservatism is all about opinions. So I decided to write about conservatives in a language they will understand, “opinions”

About the Author

I was born sixty-five years ago in a small village in a Southwestern Pennsylvania called Norvelt. I was the youngest of ten children. Norvelt was unique in many ways, but its inception was the most unique. It began as a social experiment by FDR’s administration in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. Its purpose was to provide work for the unemployed and housing for those in need. Originally called “Westmoreland Homesteads” it eventually became Norvelt, named after EleaNOR RooseVELT who was placed in charge of its development. So my early roots as a Democrat grew strong as I viewed the power of the government to help its people.

Just as greed caused that Great Depression I began to see similarities in the conservative movement of today. Working thirty-six years in special education gave me an early insight into the political workings of the conservative ideology. A government who helps those in need was not a part of this ideology.

My early years gave me a strong commitment to the values of a community that works together and helps each other. Seeds planted there continue to grow.
