Elizabeth watched as the soldiers slowly walked away, they seemed to be creeping through the wind and rain. When the British were out of sight Jonathan started forward to Dr. Ewell’s house. “Jonathan, what are you doing?” Elizabeth asked scampering after him. “I’m going to see if he needs help.” Jonathan said. “But Jonathan,” Elizabeth said coming to a sudden stop. “He’s caring for the British. He’s a traitor!” “He’s my friend and those soldiers are people who need help.” Jonathan said over his shoulder. “And I’m a doctor.” He walked right up to the house and knocked on the door. Elizabeth stayed in the street. She didn’t want to go into a traitor’s house. The British had burned Washington City. The British had caused her father to loose his arm. The British had nearly killed Eric. There was no way she was going into a house that was helping the British. It didn’t matter that Dr. Ewell was Jonathan’s friend. “Come on Elizabeth,” Jonathan called to her. She glanced up and saw that someone had opened the door to the house. “No,” Elizabeth said crossing her arms. “I’m going home.” Then she started to run.

Eleven-year-old Elizabeth King loves adventure, but living on a Virginia plantation doesn’t offer much excitement. But when Elizabeth’s favorite older brother sails off to France, her structured life starts to change, and intrigue is not far behind. Her life is turned upside down when war breaks out and her father and older brothers leave to join the army, and then her Aunt Melanie and her three children come to stay with the Kings. Their arrival shows Elizabeth just how much trouble can be found on a quiet plantation.
Even so, she does not feel the effects of the war until her father is seriously wounded and sent to a hospital in Washington. In order to see him, Elizabeth stows away in her mother’s carriage and finds herself in Washington, in the midst of a British attack, caught in the turmoil of the battle.
With the memories of the events in Washington still fresh in her mind, Elizabeth travels to New Orleans to visit her sister, Jane. But when she arrives, she discovers that her sister is gone and that her niece and nephew are in the care of a young French boy. Where has Jane gone? Will the fighting ever end?
About the Author
Stephanie Scheffler lives on a forty-acre ranch in Colorado, where she enjoys riding her horse, Socks. This is the second book in her historical fiction series for children; the first book of the series, Elise the Patriot, was published in 2008. When she is not busy writing, she participates in Civil War re-enactments.
