Alexa struggled to follow, but her legs were shaky and her balance was off. She felt a stinging nip on her right shoulder and heard a whirring sound near her right ear. He’s shooting at me! Panic seized her and she stumbled, falling flat onto the beach. The sand in front of her spewed into the air as bullets hit. Alexa rolled back to her feet, wobbling and staggering toward the water. The foamy wavelets teased at her toes, then washed over her calves as she ran. She gasped and plunged forward, feeling the cool water close over her. Her shoulder was hurting, but she kept swimming, fighting against the incoming waves. Hair hung over her face, blinding her. The skirt of her dress wrapped around her legs, making it difficult to propel her battered body toward the boat. She wiped her hand across her eyes, trying to clear her vision. Where was the boat? A strong hand from behind grabbed her left arm and Alexa flailed wildly, struggling to escape the vice-like grip. She twisted, locking eyes with the killer. His menacing face, black hair plastered around it, loomed over her. Alexa screamed, loudly, shrilly, before being forced under the salty water.
