THE HAND OF LOVE The hand of love is the hand that holds the shaving cream. The hand of love is the hand that holds the razor. In a flash, the hand of love scrapes the face of love clean and each follicle, each pore, each mole shines more brightly. The face of love bleeds at the hand of love And the sink of love gets covered in red drool While the toilet of love gurgles incessantly. The toothpaste of love says “Squeeze me!” The blowdryer of love says “Turn me on.” The aspirin of love says “Take me, take me, take me.” But the razor of love is silent and cuts—only cuts.

Some of the influences that went into this book: stupid TV reruns, annoying pop songs, limericks, Shakespearean sonnets, kids' verse, performance art, ancient Greek poetry in iambic trimeter, punk rock, porn, wymyn's lit, Andy Warhol, classified ads, Valentine's day cards, Disneyland, storebought cookies, and a fascination with words and beauty.
About the Author
Dave Dumanis earned a B.A. in English from San Diego State University in 1987. From then until 1992, when most of these pieces were born, he performed them in a series of apocryphal stand-up spoken word dates in San Diego and San Francisco, mostly at the Saigon Palace, 5A Club, and Paradise Lounge. He currently lives in San Francisco.
