AL had been working for Brown & Root in the new owner Halliburton’s machine shop in Duncan Oklahoma. It was his first job away from home and the Okies at Halliburton didn’t seem so strange but Duncan was not a prosperous town, most of the people living there were dirt poor but most employees had lots of accumulated Halliburton stock. Halliburton was a private company and stock was given to employees and bought back upon their retirement or planned departure from the company. After the company went public these employees would be millionaires despite being dirt poor most of their lives. Labor turn over at Halliburton was non-existent. Drinking alcohol was allowed in Duncan but only in private clubs. Al’s non work time was spent in the rented room of a boarding house reading history books or talking to other employees. The most popular guest was the brother of comedian George Goble. He looked exactly like his brother. When Mr. Goble wasn’t telling stories about his brother George he was on a drinking binge. Another famous guest was a big Indian named Manes who was a descendant of the father of Texas, Sam Houston. He was descended from Sam’s Indian family.

From early childhood, he lived with his parents and two brothers in the woods of East Texas on a family farm surrounded by a national forest with a wildlife management area across the road. These stories reveal how he met the love of his life Betty, what he learned by delivering the Dallas Morning News, how he fared at his first job in the Mississippi Delta in the middle of KKK country, how he perceived his work at a Texas prison, and how he came to work in Siberia for a pipeline company. As Al reflects on the cycles his long and varied life, he shares the stories that shape a person and make a man a man.
About the Author
Alan Neil was raised in East Texas. Throughout his lifetime, he circled the earth two times a year for twenty-seven years. He served in five wars and battled cancer for ten years. He currently lives in Texas.
