About the Book

Increasingly in modern society children are born into the world burdened by parental expectations, which can lead an impressionable child to become an overachiever. As a result, the child may grow into an adult who is never satisfied with his accomplishments, no matter how substantial they are perceived to be by family and peers. The themes of conformity and lost innocence are explored thoughtfully in “POETRY OF MIDLIFE CRISIS.” Suddenly, in midlife, the poet discovers that his destiny has been defined by others. The crisis is upon him; it is time to pause, to take stock. Mr. Mayer’s provocative poems are evidence of self discovery, of the self freeing itself, of one man’s emancipation. Often poignant, certainly wry and playful, Mr. Mayer’s collection of verse challenges our assumptions and conventions and, in so doing, the author not only liberates his own soul but lifts the reader’s spirits.

About the Author

Martin C. Mayer is retired and currently lives in Palm Beach County, Florida. He holds B.A. and J.D. degrees from Columbia. He previously practiced law, owned a small chain of supermarkets, was an owner-builder of commercial income properties, owned a nationally operating commercial lease auditing company and was an authority and national lecturer on plain language errors in commercial leases. Most of the offerings in this volume were written in the mid 1980s when the author decided to get off his hectic business merry-go-round and sit home for a couple of years reassessing the direction of his life. The poetry offered in this volume is the product of in depth reflection by the author as to the meaning of his existence, its relevance, and his place in the Universe. His current interests include writing, tennis, chess, classical music, stamp collecting, and travel.
