The week that followed was quiet and as the days wore on the absence of Kate in Hannah’s life was palpable. The season turned from autumn to winter seemingly overnight when one morning Hannah woke to a delicate sifting of snow that had fallen and coated the ground. On this morning, she shivered against the wind as she made her way outside, her footprints stamping the frosty ground evidencing her path to the car. After unlocking her car door, she slid into the driver’s seat and turned the ignition. As the car began to warm, she watched the icy skin on the windows slide away offering her a better view outside.
Her eyes fell to the rearview mirror that reflected the houses across the road, and in particular Kate’s home. It appeared ordinary in its existence, but Hannah felt empty as she looked to that house now with discriminating eyes. It no longer reflected a place of comfort and familiarity but one that was now uncomfortable and strange. Despite her conviction not to be adversely affected by Kate, she felt emotionally bruised by her accusations and sad to feel that a friend could turn on her so easily. She wondered how she would function as a neighbour to someone she now had to turn away from and pretend wasn’t there. As though to escape these thoughts, she put the car into reverse and gently rolled the car out of the driveway and made her way to work.

Hannah and Martha Hutton were left to pick up the pieces of their lives after their parents die suddenly in a tragic car crash. The police are not convinced it was simply an accident but a deliberate attempt on their lives. With very little to go on and no witnesses, the case went cold. While trying to make sense of the tragedy, Hannah commits to staying with her younger sister in the family home. She must take a job in her Uncle’s law firm and give up her dream to go to University. While her sister’s personal life flourishes, Hannah’s is put on hold, delaying her own happiness in the hopes that she will one day find out the truth behind her parents’ murders. Hannah has a chance encounter one day with Joe Hastings, a Special Investigations Officer, who offers to review her parents’ case. Once the case is re-opened, it triggers a series of alarming events that forever changes the innocent life that Hannah once knew. Hannah discovers that those who she cares most about are not who she believes them to be. The secrets, once revealed, lead her to doubt everything she once had faith in and leads her to question the honesty of those she thought she knew.

Nicky Hindmarsh is a landscape and seascape artist. She and her husband, Michael, live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and have four children. This is her first novel.
