For centuries communities have been evolving and adjusting to the times. This trend continues even today. However, how have these communities been evolving for the better? Are communities like those in Africa been held back because of ignorance, backwardness, hopelessness, and poor leadership filled with corruption, patrimonialism and selfishness? Do these African communities have the AUDACITY to borrow a leaf from a few communities like those in German who evolved through the bringing down of the Berlin wall to bring change? Or is the “Chinese way” led by the mixing of Chinese culture and that of the west to enhance that country’s current economic development path into a new and dynamic economic power; together with the gradual destruction of her own once cherished communism to embrace a new capitalist society a lesson for Africans? Additionally, is Africa’s backwardness a source of its being looked down upon by its western and Asian trade partners? I presume this is so and we must rise up audaciously to create the African continent name that is credible enough to relate with the rest of the world while focusing on only mutual interests. But not a continent full of citizens who are both evasive of their own realities and illusioned to think that their existence is owed to them by those who destroyed what would be their incremental rise to modernity. Besides we must realize that we have remained in a state of backwardness, hopelessness, disease, and all the other hindrances to development for a long time. Without underestimating the above, can we then say that the nature of statehood and the colonial national boundaries that define several African countries been hindrances to the development and removal of total backwardness on the continent? Secondly, can we Africans continue to afford to sit back and wait for philanthropists like Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and T.V hosts and celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and other donors including IMF, the World Bank and of course the western nations to part with their wealth and develop the continent? Do these Philanthropists, foundations, organizations, and countries owe Africa any living? Furthermore, when would African leaders stop trotting the western world to attend conferences and summits that exclusively target aid for Africa and on Africans? Besides, to what extent has this aid been effective in the development of the African continent? In this authoritative piece, Professor Kaluya castigates fellow Africans, especially the leaders and intellectuals of the African continent to understand how significant BACKWARDNESS has remained a major aspect in holding the continent in the dark. He traces the level of African backwardness from an African societal perspective that failed to inherit the fundamental truths, to enhance a creative and effective developmental scope started off by the Stone Age. The level of BACKWARDNESS in Africa is further stagnated by increased dependence of Africans on their former colonial masters and donors who today continue to hold the continent at ransom, through foreign aid offers and collaboration with African leaders to sustain their economies on mostly foreign aid. Above all, the fall of the Berlin wall in German to unite the east and west is the setting of this piece, and offers Africans and their leaders an opportunity to audaciously look forward and revolutionalize the continent back into the hands of the African people.
About the Author
Professor Michael D. Kaluya was born and raised in Uganda, East Africa. He attended Mwiri Primary School & Namalemba Boarding Mixed Primary School for his elementary education. He went to Busoga College Mwiri for Ordinary Level Certificate of Education or High School Diploma and Makerere High School for his Advanced Level Certificate of Education (A-Level). He moved to the United States of America in 1998 to further his education. He attended Dallas Baptist University for his Bachelor of Business Administration & Economics (May, 2001) and a Master of Business Administration in International Business & Economics (May, 2004). He also attended the University of Texas at Dallas where he earned two additional masters: Master of Science in International Political Economy (Dec. 2008) & a Master of Arts in Political Science (May, 2010). He is currently pursuing a PhD in Business Administration at Northcentral University as well as teaching as an adjunct Professor of Economics, Business, & Management at Cedar Valley College, Lancaster, Texas USA.
