Murphy cut his dinner short and returned to his apartment. Renee had understood as it was easy to see the angst on his face. Now alone in the dark apartment he poured a Scotch and stared out the window at the flickering lights of San Francisco. He looked out over the city he struggled to protect for so many years. Now it would go on about its business unnoticing it had one less man to watch over it. Murphy stood on the balcony gazing out for what seemed like and eternity. He removed the simple brown tie and tossed it over the rail. "Here!" he yelled. "Time for someone else to wear the damn thing."

District Attorney Glynnis Lomax is overworked and troubled by memories as she attempts to come to grips with the brutal murder of her colleague. Unable to tolerate imperfection from anyone, Glynnis immerses herself in the investigation and is soon irritated by the novice detective assigned to the case. Desperate for help as the mayor and press relentlessly hound her for answers, Glynnis places her faith in her long-time friend and mentor Detective Murphy. Only a week from retirement, Murphy reluctantly takes on the case. As the body count increases, though, Murphy and Glynnis must find a murderer with an insatiable thirst for revenge before it is too late.
About the Author
M. Alan Apel was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended Wayne State and Arizona State University. He later settled in the San Francisco Bay area, where he wrote a column for the local newspaper and owned a coatings business. Now a full-time writer, he is hard at work on his next mystery.
