Hands held overhead, Dan opened the truck door and quickly stepped to the ground. Hoover skidded to a gangly stop, craned low to sniff boots, and worked his nose up to Dan’s crotch. The hound’s suspicion turned to joy as he recognized the scent. The dog drooled, wagged his tail, and circled Dan’s legs. Dan lowered his hands, and Hoover coated them with cheerfully applied saliva.
Frank swung the shotgun skyward and stepped from the doorway. He assessed the blue, faded trousers secured with hemp rope, bloused, white gauze shirt, and cowboy boots. He squinted and tried to discern the face shadowed by a straw sombrero and camouflaged by an unkempt beard.
“Who in holy hell are you?”
Dan walked from behind the open door of the pickup. “It’s me, Frank—Dan Castle.”
Frank stepped off the porch, shotgun still pointed up. “The hell you say?”
“I’ve come looking for Keely.”
Frank moved a few steps closer. His eyes popped in sudden recognition.
“Be a neat trick, seein’ as they say you killed her.”

About the Author
DOUGLAS BEACH and his wife, Denise DiPietro, an editor, owned the Double D Guest Ranch in northern Arizona for twelve years before moving across the border to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. When Doug is not fly-fishing from the shores of Zihuatanejo Bay, he is working on his second novel, Borderheart.
