The three Lees moved to the kitchen and lunched hastily, before Jonah walked to the garage to take J.B.’s BMW into Beaufort. Backing out of the driveway, Jonah hesitated, as an unmarked white mini-van crossed in front of him and drove onto Hamoud’s driveway. In the front seat of the vehicle were two rather dark-complexioned, bearded men. Both looked to be of Middle Eastern origin, probably in their twenties and dressed in wrinkled khaki uniforms.
Stopping halfway down his own driveway, Jonah turned off the ignition and went back into the house.
“Hey dad,” Jonah called, as he walked into the kitchen, where he last left his parents having a cup of coffee. … “Dad, take a look out the dining room window. What do you think?”
J.B. moved to the dining room and peered out one of the windows. He immediately noticed the minivan. “You’re talking about the van?”
“Yeah. Looks kind of peculiar, don’t you think? It could be some kind of service call, but don’t those guys look kind of suspicious?”
As they watched, the two men climbed out of the van to talk to Hamoud, who signaled for them to follow him inside.
“Heck, I don’t know,” J.B., said. “Could be anything. I wouldn’t worry about it. … You go on and get your haircut. I’ll keep an eye on them for a while.”

Two Islands: Terror in the Lowcountry is ALLAN WINNEKER ’s third novel. He has previously been a marketing executive and an officer in the Navy Reserve. Currently, he lives with his wife, Betty, on Callawassie Island in South Carolina.
