The Dream This morning, as I slept under the trees, I had a dream. The sun had just broken over the horizon, when a little yellow flower turned to me and in the softest voice asked me. “Have you ever seen anything so warm?” I turned my face to the east and felt the warmth the flower spoke of. “Yes, I have,” I replied, “I have seen a smile warmer than that.” Then, two more flowers joined in, a little white one and a dark red one. As the birds sang to welcome the new day, the flowers, together, asked me. “Have you ever heard a more joyous sound?” I listened to the birds in the trees and the crickets among the leaves; I heard the creek that bubbled over the stones, even the wind that whispered high in the treetops. “Yes, I have,” I replied. “Tell us!” they cried. “I... have heard laughter.” Now all the forest flowers began to sway, as though they danced, and together they asked. “Have you ever seen anything more beautiful… than us?” Again, I replied. “Yes, I have.” “Show us!” they whispered. “I will,” I promised. Just then, a bird landing on my foot woke me from my dream. As I lay awake among the trees, I remembered. I felt the warmth of the sun on my face; I heard the birds and the creek and wind. I looked upon the beauty of the forest, everywhere flowers opening to greet the day. When I stood, I saw at my feet, a tiny bundle of flowers. I remembered my dream, and I remembered my promise so I’ve sent them along so they could see for themselves.
