America In The First
(in memory of 9/11)
O dear America in the first I am with you!
Together we stand for the life of Democracy
For I am you, and you are I,
United into the accord with each other
Like a father to his son! Like a son to his father!
Bearing arms against the riptide for our salvation!
America will not fall! For we are brave like the word itself!
Liberty shall prevail throughout our will, and destiny,
To overcome the injustices that besieged our precious land!
O dear America in the first I am with you!
Freedom, the symbol of our pride has been struck,
May our warm prayers shed a tear amongst the deceased!
From the rubble of our hearts we shall rise, and reconquer!
Our country shall prevail beyond the terror of attack!
Together we fight for the life of Democracy

Floating On The Banner
Of A Dream
I’m floating on the banner of a dream called civilization
For the joy of art’s pleasures, to doctor a referendum,
And lithograph the sprawling heights of life’s imagination:
If Eternity can create its own flea carnival for two!
This is why I frolic to your gallop, as you have it,
Because I’m floating on the banner of a dream: to enjoy it.
As the circular-saw sun carves holy cities out of wood,
I’d be obliged to share the duties of mayor with you!
Let us resurrect a marching band: Atlantis with honor,
To deliver significance her platinum bars to scholars
Who are floating on the banner of a dream, to admire
Sincerity and love, like waxy hearts pinned in forest fires!
So, rejoice in passion, and the wheel of circumstance,
For humans are technological, sweet, angelic aliens: who
Need not war, but fantasies for our meaty brains to survive.
I’m floating on the banner of a dream like a cannon!
Lightning In A Jar
I used to believe in the history of time.
I used to believe in juvenile rhyme.
I used to believe in holly jolly fear!
I used to believe elections were carnival fairs.
I used to believe in the Body of Christ.
I used to believe in poltergeists!
I used to believe the homeless liked to slouch.
I used to believe in Oscar the Grouch!
I used to believe Communism was cool.
I used to believe there were drugs in high school.
I used to believe in Hollywood’s cinematic vanity.
I used to believe Poetry was poetry!
I used to believe Dad worked the hibachi.
I used to believe in subtitled karate!
I used to believe in freedom’s handshake.
I used to believe love was a San Francisco earthquake!
I used to believe in Rock the Vote!
I used to believe knowledge was worth more than gold.
I used to believe Roswell was a hoax!
I used to believe in change and hope.
I used to believe In-God-We-Trust.
I used to believe in us!

About the Book
In The Distance between Hopes and Dreams, author Charles Lobaito presents a collection of poetry that embodies and explores the human spirit. We all wish to be great, and we all dream beyond the heights of our imagination. The verses contained here examine those wishes and dreams—their conception and their accomplishment.

If Dreams Were Keys There’d Be No Locks
Door I
If dreams were keys there’d be no locks,
All prisons empty, true love run amok!
Fat angels would smile with rifles, and socks:
To target the banana-strawberry heart.
Door II
Without any locks, lions would hunt
Like beasts, to pounce, thus reinvent pun,
Or breed like citizens for sport, and court:
Under the vanilla paper bag sun …
About the Author
Charles Lobaito was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, and currently resides in South Amboy, New Jersey. He attended Middlesex County College and the University of Central Oklahoma, with a major in English. In addition to writing, he has an established career in business and retail management. This is his fourth book of poetry.
