The guest, was in fact, simply gone. The sheets had been torn off the bed and were on the floor. The clothes the stranger had been wearing when he was carried into the convent were not on the wooden peg where they had been placed. And the bandages that once covered his burned body were strewn across a night table, tossed on top the Holy Bible that had not been opened.
There was no note of gratuity, no offering, no written words of appreciation.
The guest was indeed gone, and due to the storm the night before, there was no sign of what direction he might have taken in his rapid exit.
The occupants of the abbey searched for a few hours, using the little precious energy they had left.
They searched the grounds and the numerous halls. They looked through the gardens and in the sanctuary.
They explored the property from the outer walls to the inner catacombs. They thought perhaps their patient had climbed out of bed and become disoriented. They thought perhaps the poor man was lost somewhere on their lot.
But the guest with the mysterious burns and scars over his face and body was not lost. Nor was he wandering aimlessly in a confused state of mind.
He knew exactly where he had to go. He knew exactly what road he had to take. He was clear of mind and clear of path.
He was heading for Prairie Gulch.
