Thinking about writing this letter to you, my mother, made me think of this quote about happiness. I am sure ones childhood should not cause this sort of musing. I remember well, your gentleness and softness, but also your fear and fragility. I think I felt afraid before most other feelings came into my awareness. Early echoes of angry words, not yours but those directed at you, and the loudness that universally frightens children, brought with them a cold wind and steady anticipation of problems. I remember your touch as kind, an attempt to give security where you felt none. I would feel your restlessness, you were young and beautiful, and your life was not. I have a memory that reoccurs from time to time. It was a car ride home from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. The brakes were going out of the car. How much like life that car seemed to me—out of control and racing along. But I also remember believing there was a –way? When you left us, in the turbulent 60s, I held the hand of my little brother and as he crossed his fingers to begin his waiting and watching vigil, I feared you would never return. The times you did come back briefly, I think I remember feeling hope…maybe you could stay. But, it was not to be.

About the Author
Charmaine Sheeler is one of ten children and is a native of Ohio. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and currently resides in the Washington, DC, area where she works for the Federal Government as a paralegal. She also operates a small business specializing in homemade teddy bears, home décor and event planning.
