A week later on Friday afternoon, Doug went to his car after work. It was over ninety degrees and a top down afternoon for sure. There was no weekend work so he was looking forward to two free days off. He drove up to the intersection at the end of North Kendall street and stopped for the red traffic signal. He noticed the afternoon bus that was heading into Dover center pass by and stop in front of Lucky’s Cafe. Two men and a women stepped off and just as the bus pulled away, he saw Lurene come running out and stop at the curb. She dropped her arms at her side and looked back and forth frustrated. The signal light changed and Doug turned the car and stopped in front of Lucky’s. Lurene had turned and started back toward the cafe. He tapped his horn slightly to get her attention. She looked back and noticed him. She walked to the car and greeted Doug with a wide smile. “Hey Sweetie. Nice car” she said looking at the hood and then the trunk and rear seat. “Thanks. Can I give you a lift somewhere; I saw you miss the bus.” “Oh that’s so nice but I can get the next one. It’ll be along in about twenty minutes.” “Hey, it’s no trouble and why wait here in the heat when you can ride in my snappy convertible.” She smiled and opened the door and sat down on the seat. Doug pulled into the traffic as soon as he could safely do so.
