The Rock Star of Vampires

She could smell him. His fragrance was so strong that it became apparent to her from the moment he walked through the door. It didn’t matter that she was in a crowded grocery store, full of Saturday afternoon shoppers. It didn’t matter that vulgar odors surrounded her – cheap perfume, poor hygiene, laundry detergent - Ava Lilith caught his delicious aroma the second he arrived. It was sweet and refreshing, heavenly and intoxicating. She felt a bounce in her step as she glided up and down the aisles in search of this rare treat. At first, rushing – but suddenly self-conscious, Ava slowed down to a normal pace. There was no need to draw attention to the excitement that bubbled inside of her.
But oh, she was excited! Her heart raced in anticipation. It wasn’t the fact that his breed was uncommon. Finding their kind in the western Canadian city of Vancouver was the tricky part. They were rarely found in a grocery store. Ava mostly discovered them in college bars, malls and movie theaters – but they were always surrounded by friends and often difficult to separate from the others. She hoped he was alone. It would be much easier if no one were around to cause a distraction.
The intoxicating smell grew stronger which meant Ava was getting closer. People didn’t seem to notice anything unusual about a young woman walking mindlessly through the aisles, an empty green basket in hand. They couldn’t recognize that her caramel eyes were fading to a softer version. Nor could they see her cheeks became flushed as she moved closer to the scent. Electricity ran through Ava’s body but no one was aware that her eyelashes were flickering twice as fast, as they always did when she recognized this scent. It was an aphrodisiac to her kind – those who were drawn to blood.
