We know our children's habits well, but even when you're aware of the signs of addiction, the signs of relapse; it's heartbreaking to see it coming. My son disappeared for hours; no phone call, no text message, no response. When this happens to a loved one who suffers from the disease of addiction, panic follows, quickly. Tears cloud your eyes, and your heart beats so fast you can hardly breathe. You fear what’s coming next; you fear what is about to happen.
However, this time around, this relapse, was different. This time it came out of the blue; he had six months of sobriety under his belt. But this time, he scared me more than ever before. After four hours of silence, I received the following text message: "I am done mama. I don't want this life anymore, and I can't stop it from happening. Nobody understands me, nobody can help me, not this time, and I do not want to live anymore. I love you Mama."
So this time was different, and this time I needed a new plan, and I needed it fast. The journey of addiction was about to start, all over again. There was no time for tears no time for panic, only a plan of action. This time I prayed I had enough time, to save my child.

Kathleen Arch is founder and director of New Direction 4 New Hope, a drug awareness and education organization, and cofounder of Silent Heroes, Inc. She’s written several publications including: Dancing on Eggshells and Life on a 3x5 Card and has been a featured author for In Recovery Magazine. Arch currently resides in Huntington Beach, California.
