From now on, as much as my life may be described as a life with fewer surprises, at the ripe age of seventy, my life is not going to be a life of monotony. In the race of life, I am not going to stand flat-footed and motionless while I fight the battles of life. I will still move and dance like a sparrow as I choose not to fight all battles but to be selective in which battles of life I fight or engage in. In other words, I will choose to fight only worthy battles and be selective in my choice of engagements.
As I paddle my canoe wearily to the harbor, I would, even in my old age, not limit my activities to that of a captain whose main duty is that of rowing his boat in ponds, creeks, and rivulets of wetlands or to become a captain in my old age, whose major occupation is waking up early, to polish my anchored ship at the harbor. Doing this will be like the situation described by Slinger Francisco as standing on the stage, flatfooted and motionless and not having stage personality.
On my return journey as a seafarer in life’s encounters, having seen the wonders of the world on the deck of my ship in my outbound journey, my return voyage will be in a submarine where I can have a worm’s eye view and see details of the wonders of the world that are buried in the belly of the sea. When I am to depart as all mortals do, it will be seen and known that I was here on this planet.

About the Author
OLUWOLE KOMOLAFE studied Industrial Engineering at the Technische Universitaet, Berlin. He is an ardent student of philosophy and classics and has previously published many other books on African wisdom and philosophical reflections on the life of man. He currently lives in Lagos, Nigeria with his family.
