About the Book
In 1750 This is the story of the Martin family of France: Grandfather Benjamin; Grandmother Christine; Father Andre; Mother Denise; Son Alain; Daughter Julie. They have emigrated to Canadian Acadia to escape heavy taxation and to find a new life in the New World. Under the yoke of the British Expulsions of all French speakers from what is present day Nova Scotia the Martins set out for Louisiana leaving grandparents in the little town of Grand Prè and Father Andre to the fight against the British with the Indians in what became the French and Indian War. Their journey down the Atlantic Coast through the British Colonies is both exciting and harrowing as they meet hostile Indians and Colonial Governors. There are two aims for the journey—to find Father Andre and to reach Louisiana to establish a new and permanent home for the entire family., George Washington is winning and losing battles in the struggle between the British and French for control of North America.
About the Author
Edward Beardsley was born in Chicago and spent his first seventeen years there. He dropped out of high school to join the Navy near the end of WW II. After boot camp he was assigned to Task Force 68, Operation Highjump, bound for Antarctica under command of Admiral Richard E. Byrd.
He earned a BA from Westminster College, Fulton, Mo. and later his MA from Stetson University, DeLand, Florida. He spent thirty-one years as a teacher and principal in the Volusia County, Florida, public schools. He retired to write fiction beginning with short stories that led him to the novel, of which BIRCHES is his third.He has driven a cab in Chicago, wrestled alligators and trained porpoises in Daytona Beach. He spent twenty years running long distance races from the mile to the marathon and played tennis most of his life. He has been a jazz drummer from childhood. He and his wife, Ann, raised two children, James and Mary, both graduates of the University of Florida.
Edward lives and writes in San Mateo, Florida.
