I can't move. I'm surrounded by dragons that won't stop throwing flames at me. I don't know what colour they are, because all I can see is their fire, with dark shadows and bright eyes staring at me. Although the flames coming out of their snouts don't hurt me, I'm afraid. We are standing over a piece of black land floating in the cosmos. The dragons, with calm steps, lift a cloud of dust that makes it difficult for me to see. Despite my fear, I don't think they will hurt me. Walking towards one of the dragons, I reach out to touch him on the head, but suddenly there's a roar of thunder. The noise scares them and they fly away, leaving me alone in this piece of dark land, floating in empty space.
Waking up frightened, I crawl off my bed wanting to sleep with my parents, but standing in front of the door of their bedroom, I can't knock; they are fighting again. Laying down on the floor just a few steps away from the door, I fall asleep in that place, the truth is that I'm too afraid to go back to my room; I might dream again with those beasts. Sleeping in front of my parent's room, I can see how the piece of black land float's with the stars. Slowly fragments made of rocks and dirt come together with the dark land. From beneath, dragons fly out, their flames of several colors, blue, red, green and white weld the rocks and dirt too the land, making a bigger single terrain.
Next morning, I wake up in the bed of my bedroom. I think my mom found me, picked me up and tuck me in. Today is Friday ¡It's great, tomorrow is Saturday and no school! But if I don't hurry and get ready to go, my mom will ground me all weekend and then I won't be able to play. Getting off the bed and then to the closet, I put on my clothes. 10 years old kids have a lot of stuff to do, but the most important thing is ¡Play! Looking at myself in the mirror, I find over my bed a four horned dragon and yellow eyes, extending his wing, all his body is covered with green emerald scales. When I turn around, for my surprise there is nothing there, searching everywhere trying to find something, my mom comes in to tell me that breakfast is ready, and asks
–"What are you looking for?"

In a far corner of the universe, dragons of creation have provided life to the dark land of Naibar through the mind of a ten-year-old boy. Within Naibar lives Samoilg, a vicious creature determined to take the boy’s life and Sufur, the young guardian of the land who has a newly-created mission to save the boy along with the planet. Unfortunately, Sufur has no idea how he will achieve his goal. As Recoto—a humanoid tree and guardian of memory—begins helping Sufur explore Naibar, he tumbles upon mystical places and, along with the boy, must confront Ilkey, a creature that feeds from fear and Iblis, a demon desperate to steal the boy’s soul. While the boy vacillates between two worlds in dreams until he is too ill to continue, Sufur and Recoto gather power and weapons to save him from a seemingly inevitable dark destiny. When they finally defeat Samoilg, now they must rescue the boy’s soul from Ilkey and Iblis, or he will never get a second chance at life. In this fantasy novel, a boy trapped between reality and a fantasy world must rely on help from a guardian and a band of unlikely heroes to save him from a dark fate.

Adrian Cruz earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Aguascalientes, Mexico. He emigrated from Mexico to Canada to follow the dream of a better life. Adrian currently resides in Vancouver. The Paradise behind the Mind is his first novel.
