Teh-Ghut-Sa and I prepare to receive the Bakài. I take my position and wait. Teh-Ghut-Sa sits in the centre of the grove facing east. Soon, I sense a strange energy, one different from that which I encountered the first time the Bakài attacked. Suddenly, an explosion disrupts the air over the grove. Dark, hideous figures begin to descend upon us. The figures have huge mouths and teeth as large as a bull moose. From out of their appendages shoot streaks of red and yellow flame, erupting within arm’s length of Teh-Ghut-Sa’s body. I strike. The Bakài turn their attention to me and try to thwart my attack. I increase the ferocity of my attack; they increase the ferocity of theirs. A windstorm develops, and the Bakài churn the air into a funnel cloud. Waves of searing hot wind lash against my spirit-body. The storm is so intense that I almost lose control of my position. I summon every bit of energy that I possess and send it into the Bakài’s web. The web explodes. Immediately, calm returns to the grove. I remind myself of what Teh-Ghut-Sa had said about the Bakài’s deception; I will not lower my guard. A pause . . . it does not last long. The sky is ablaze with heat-storms and thunder. Swirling clouds cover the grove and, like a lid covering a pot of beans that has been placed over the fire, the clouds prevent heat from escaping the grove. The atmosphere becomes so hot it appears that Teh-Ghut-Sa’s skin is melting. I leave my perch and with eyes ablaze fly directly into the densest, most intense part of the heat-storm. An explosion of the highest magnitude sends me whirling out into space; it is Grandfather He-No’s thunderbolt lighting up the sky. I lose consciousness. . . .

About the Book
Peter Barbieri’s final novel in his trilogy continues with EMILY MADDING’s journal; in it, Emily documents PALE-MOON’s narration of life in her [Pale-Moon] ninth-century Native American village. Pale-Moon’s connection to Emily, a woman living in the nineteenth century, enables the two women to dream-travel to each other’s “time-band”. Thus begins a celestial relationship that endures for centuries.
Emily frequently dream-travels to the ninth-century village and is present during the birth and much of the subsequent twenty-year life of Pale-Moon’s nephew TEH-GHUT-SA. The narration recounts the periods during which Teh-Ghut-Sa undertakes two vision quests: the first at age thirteen; the second at age twenty.
As events unfold, an imbalance in the interstellar positive-negative polarity develops. Emily—her ability to “dream-travel” to time-bands within the past, present, and future—reveals several possibilities that would result if the balance tips in favor of the negative polarity. If the imbalance were to progress unaltered, mayhem and death would result.
When Teh-Ghut-Sa, age twenty, returns from his second vision quest, he becomes the target of a negative-polarity plot. The confrontation's eventual outcome will affect the lives of all beings residing in the known universe. A more immediate consequence: the stream of consciousness that had given rise to the mind-consciousness of many village inhabitants would be obliterated, along with the lives of those connected to it.
About the Author
Peter Barbieri’s previous works of fiction—Tales from the Soft Underbelly of Confusion, a collection of short stories; Tree of Dreams, the first novel of the trilogy; and The Purple Sky (book one), the second novel of the trilogy—were published by iUniverse in 2007, 2009, and 2011 respectively.
Peter Barbieri received his doctorate in music composition from the University of Colorado Boulder. He completed his postdoctoral studies with Luciano Berio in Florence, Italy.
Barbieri is the executive director of the ijamjazz summer jazz camp in Bonefro, Italy, and teaches jazz theory and improvisation at his home in Longmont, Colorado.
