Children of the Night

As Charles turned his attention back to the road ahead he noticed a distant set of headlight his rear view mirror that disappeared as he continued down the tree lined twisting country road. The roads twisted left and right and became narrower as he came near to his Westchester estate. Charles checked his rear view mirror again and saw nothing then eased back into his seat listening to a live recording by Sananda Maitreya in the cool summer air. The sudden flash of head light turning around the last bend in the road he had just made snapped Charles out of his peaceful trance. Judging by the rapidly increasing brightness of the lights behind him he knew the trailing car was catching up with him real fast. Oh my God, this can't be happening. Why is she fucking with me now? Charles thought to himself. Charles had few enemies, but the ones he did have were ruthless and beyond the law; i.e., the so-called Priest of Serapes and the woman responsible for his nightmarish condition, Dechontee. Charles knew if Dechontee wanted to find him it was useless to run from her. He only hoped that she would not find Elaine as a threat and let him live in peace. If it was another kidnapping attempt by the followers of Serapes Charles knew he and Elaine was more than a match for them. Charles maintained his rate of speed to allow the trail car to catch up and to keep the element of surprise. "What's the matter Babe"? Elaine asked as she sensed the change in Charles's mood. "Just relax and do not say or do anything". Charles said in a comforting voice trying to hide the sheer terror racing through his soul. “Are we being followed?” She asked. “I think so, but I not sure, it could be nothing.” He said trying to reassure her. The trailing Mercedes Benzes followed dangerously close behind Charles's Bentley for several miles along the isolated country road. Charles intentionally drove in the opposite direction of his estate hoping this wouldn’t be another intimidation session with Dechontee and she will leave never knowing where he actually lived. The Mercedes finally pulled alongside the Charles’s Bentley car door with the darkened windows still rolled up. "Why are you so nervous? Babe your making me scared". Elaine said. Elaine had never seen Charles show fear in the ten years that she had known him. In fact, it was others who tremble in fear once they saw Charles's true face. "Don’t worry Babe; it's just that bitch I was telling you about". Charles's words while filled with bravado where not reassuring. Elaine while new to the game was still somewhat aware of how dangerous Dechontee was and how powerless Charles was to protect her if things got ugly.
