The objective of this book “50 true stories of minority nurses experiences while working in New York city is to create awareness and identify how racism and discrimination in the work place affect minority nurses and the fabric of the nursing profession in New York City. This book will reveal the treatment, lack of promotion, lack of diversity, lack of moral support and other barriers minority nursing students and practicing nurses faced on the job while working in New York City. Minority nurses are severely underrepresented within the healthcare settings in the 21st century. Strict Laws, enforcement of Affirmative action and regulations of healthcare facilities to eradicate racism and discrimination minority nurses encountered in the work place is crucial and needs immediate attention from all local and State officials as well as the New York State of Professional services. Are you a minority nurse working in hospital settings throughout New York City? Have you experienced racism or discrimination on the job? Have you ever been passed over for promotion just because you are a minority nurse? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this book is for you. I was compelled to write this book to create awareness for all minority nurses in nursing schools, actively practicing and retired minority nurses. Throughout my nursing career as a registered nurse in New York City, I have experienced positive experiences as well as negative ones. However, as I pursued my nursing career and have the opportunity to meet and work with many minority nurses it has become extremely difficult for me to put up deaf ears to the multitude of despicable treatments experienced by minority nurses within the work place. This book will address 50 true stories experienced by minority nurses in various hospitals throughout New York. I have also received similar cases from other states, but New York City top the list of complaints from minority nurses. It is my hope that minority nurses who are now venturing into the profession will be aware of these issues, obstacles, challenges, disrespect and lack of promotion within the nursing profession. I must warn you some of these nurses experience may leave a bitter taste in your mouth, but I do hope you learn and address similar issues before they get out of control. As you will see from the stories of 50 nurses diversity in the nursing profession is lacking and poses real destruction to the health care system and the profession of nursing. All minority nurses are encouraged when faced with such problems to tackle them head on before it escalates. Seek help whether it be from your specific Nurses Association, State board of nursing, Political figure / representative for your State, an attorney or the news media as deem necessary. As you read these nurses stories you may have at some point in your career experienced the same or similar problems, do not be fearful find someone to talk to and stay on top of whatever the issue is until you get some kind of resolution. About the Author
Melvina Semper earned a bachelor of science in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing, and a doctorate in clinical nursing practice. After nine years at the bedside as a nurse, she began teaching several college courses, including critical care nursing, medical surgical nursing, and leadership nursing. The mother of two lives in New York City.
