Lilly and Nasreen walked along the street, talking and looking at clothing and other various items for sale. This was actually one of their favorite pastimes. Because the street was crowded, people were walking shoulder to shoulder as they passed shoppers walking in the opposite direction. Among the throng, Lilly spied a young man who seemed to be purposely walking toward her. He would glance at her and then at other shoppers. She held Nasreen’s right arm with her own left and turned slightly to lean toward Nasreen to give the young man room to pass. That move may have saved her life. As the man passed, he pulled something from his pocket and Lilly felt a sharp, piercing blow to her chest. She collapsed onto the pavement, almost pulling Nasreen down with her.

About the Author
Mehry M. Reid was born in Persia and studied fine arts in Tehran, London, and Los Angeles before immigrating to the United States in 1976. She resides with her physician husband, Thomas, in Ijamsville, Maryland, where she is a guest lecturer on Persian art and an active volunteer. Mehry has authored five books on Persian art, a Persian cookbook, a Persian memoir, and Persian Legends: A Book of 101 Stories.
