I would say that nature has been just a bit kinder to Ireland in wild beauty, but the human beings in Britain have done more for their landscape. Britain strikes me as prettier; Ireland as more sublime or just a bit grotesque--with Virgin Mary grottoes complete with neon lights blighting the landscape. Still, one understands that the history of being an oppressed people and being a great deal poorer than Britain--and having to practice their Catholicism in defiance of England--makes all of this quite understandable. I don't mean to judge the Irish as being deficient in Englishness, just to observe what I think I see. The Irish clearly have it all over the English in friendliness and all of the merits of being forthcoming and generous-spirited and non-judgmental of their fellows.

About the Author
Glynn Baugher grew up in rural Virginia, graduated from William Monroe High School, earned his Bachelor of Arts from Emory and Henry College, his Master of Arts and Ph. D. from Tulane University. He taught college for thirty-four years. Father of three children, Glynn is now retired and lives in Emory, Virginia.
