About the Book

Understanding Me is the story of Akilah a pre-teen African American girl who finds all about her African heritage on a trip to Detroit to see her favorite grandparents. Akilah discovers her love for self and her heritage on this trip that begins a journey of deep self-love and appreciation for her culture.

About the Author

Author Angela Rena was born in San Diego, CA where she learned about community empowerment through her mother and father, who worked to teach African Americans the value of owning real estate. Today, Angela Rena makes a living as a writer. She is a published author of several books, a journalist, radio, and podcast host who continues to champion social issues in local underrepresented communities.
