The last item Mona pulled from the chest was an ancient hidebound book. … It was black and scaly yet smooth with wear. Branded into the cover was a large gnarled tree and the head of a lion. A chunky oval metal clasp with an intricate keyhole sealed the huge book. Liv could see that the pages of the book were handmade, uneven, and yellowed with age. Mona rubbed her hand on the cover as if reminiscing.
“Liv, do you remember the fairy tales I used to tell you when you were a child? The ones about Lysterium?”
Liv wondered why she would bring this up. “Yes,” she answered tentatively.
Mona was nervous; Liv could hear it in her voice. She could see that whatever Mona was about to tell her was going to be difficult.
“Well, it’s not a fairy tale. Lysterium is real. You have known Wes and Amara … everyone … your whole life through my stories, and they know you. I have always been in contact with them.” She held up the pocket watch from the chest. “Amara gave this to me the first time I went to Lysterium.”

About the Author
Bethany Shehorn was born in Scottsdale, Arizona; began writing fiction at age nine; and published her first children’s book in 2005. She is a veterinary technician, singer/songwriter, makeup artist/hairstylist, photographer, and artist. Shehorn still lives in Scottsdale with her husband, Matt, and their house full of rescue animals.
