Most of the horses were around the same size, and the one mare they could easily recognize was slightly larger than the rest of the herd. As Cassie scanned the tree groves looking to see if any horses were resting near the tree, she suddenly called out, “I think I see her at the edge of the group of trees … by the right side of the lake.” They strained to pick out the horse that Cassie saw.
Suddenly the horses seemed finished with their drinking and in what appeared to be one motion turned and started up the hill to the side of the lake. “Looks like they’re finished drinking and are returning to the grass,” said Annie.
The foursome watched as the herd started to move off, but what surprised them was what happened next. As they watched, several horses came from behind the trees. They watched as those horses joined the retreating herd. It seemed like the last horse followed the group when a lone horse came out of the trees. It was the large mare!
Annie and Cassie excitedly whispered, “… it’s the mare!” They watched for a few seconds and Annie turned and said uneasily, “Something isn’t right.”

About the Book
Annie and Cassie are best friends who met at Rolling Hills Equestrian School. Even though they began as strangers, their shared love for horses and adventure kept them together, especially when they helped nurse a young foal back to life. Now, winter break rapidly approaches, and the girls are excited to head back to Rolling Hills for a holiday vacation.
Reunited with their beloved rescued foal, Got Carrots, the girls are also happy to see the local cat, Jasmine. They’re even happier to be together at Rolling Hills. Annie and Cassie will get to attend classes over their holiday vacation, where they will have the chance to learn even more about riding, grooming, and showing horses.
Adventure seeks them out when an injured mare is brought to the equestrian school. The girls suspect this mare is somehow related to Got Carrots. Then, Jasmine goes missing, and the entire school sets out to find her. Between the search for the cat and the arrival of the mysterious mare, Annie and Cassie may learn more than they ever expected at another adventure-filled holiday at Rolling Hills!
About the Author
Patti Dammier has a PhD in psychology and has been an educator of horses for over thirty years. She studied equestrian science in Spain, Portugal, England, and Germany. She now lives on a small farm in the United States with her beloved pets: two Great Danes, a cheerful pit bull, several cats, and all of her horses.
